Richard The is a designer and artist whose work investigates the aesthetic and cultural implications of technology on society. His projects are media-agnostic, ranging from graphic design, to user interfaces to immersive installations. His most recent work explores image datasets as the foundation of crucial systems we interact with everyday, such as cultural and academic institutions, generative AI and surveillance algorithms.

Richard’s work has been exhibited internationally, at Design Museum London, Ars Electronica, 21_21 Design Sight Tokyo, Milan Design week, MIT Museum, MIT Media Lab, Williams College Museum of Art and Eyebeam. He is the winner of numerous awards including the Google Art & Machine Intelligence research award, SEGD Global Design Award, Core 77 Design Awards, AIGA 365, TDC Tokyo, Schnitzer Prize in the Visual Arts, the Knight Foundation Museum Technology grant and ADC Young Guns and his work has been featured in Surface, Dezeen, Creative Applications, Colossal, The Verge, Gizmodo, Wired and Fast Company Design. He is a member of the Alliance Graphique Internationale.

After working as a Designer at Sagmeister Inc. and Creative Director at Google Creative Lab he is now partner at the interdisciplinary design studio TheGreenEyl.
Richard is an Assistant Professor of Interaction Design at Parsons School of Design and the director of the MS Data Visualization program. He has previously taught at MIT, NYU and SVA. Richard has an MFA in Visual Communication from the University of the Arts Berlin, and a Master of Science from MIT Media Lab.
